Pile & Dock
Maintenance
Your Underwater Pile and Dock maintenance walkthough
The adage of "out of sight out of mind" rings true too often in regards to Pile and Dock maintenance. Especially when the area of concern is in the least interesting body of water to a boater. That is the water between their dock and their boat. Below we took care to outline some areas of concern for home owners with waterfront property.
Ladders
Don't cut your feet!
It's very difficult for some boat owners to clean their ladders from topside. This is normally a job for a diver. If neglected for too long which in some areas can merely be a few weeks time, the steps of the ladder will become covered in sharp barnacles and oysters. Even you stepped onto the ladder with flip flops or sandals, your ankles would still be exposed to the sharp edges of the biofouling because they not only grow on the steps but on the vertical rails as well.
Concrete Pile
Clean off Oysters
Oysters growing off of concrete piles are not only very unsightly, but they can be a hazard to your boat and they can even be dangerous. Due to the strength and the porous surface of the concrete façade, oysters are able to grow and expand around these piles by as much as 2 feet sometimes! Sometimes more. When this happens, your piles can be treated as if they were covered in kitchen knives.
Timber Pile
Extend the Life of your Pile
Many piles are wrapped in a plastic covering called a "pile jacket". This is meant to keep out wood borrowing critters like ship worms from eating up the pile. Kind o of like the termites of the sea, they'll eat the wood comprise it's integrity. Your Pile Jackets are your first line of defense against them.
But, your pile jackets have their own enemy,
Barnacles and Oysters.
